Using Web Browsers

1. Click on the "Home" button in your browser.

2. Can you change the appearance of web pages within your browser (e.g., the font face and size)? If so, how? Why would you want to?

I can change the appearance of the webpages within my browser by clicking on "Ctrl" and "=" or "-" to make the font larger or smaller than what it was originally. This is helpful when you're either having a hard time reading the existing document or when presenting it for your intended audience.

3. What's the default search engine associated with your web browser? How do you get to it?

The default search engine on Microsoft Edge is Google. I just typed "google.com" as the url.

Searching the Web

4. Head to Google.

After searching 'learning to make web pages', I had received 3,650,000,000 matches. I can estimate that the first few sites are actully related to what I was searching for.

After searching "learning to make web pages", I had gotten 19,600 matches. Thanks to the quotation marks, it's safe to say that there are a lot more websites that are relevant to 'learning to make web pages'.

Repeat the same tasks for the following websites:
  • Bing
  • When searching for learning to make web pages with and without the quotation marks, the difference between these searches are significant. The one without the quotation marks had 77,900,000 results while the one with the quotation marks only gave me 12 results.

  • Yahoo
  • As I was searching learning to make web pages with and without quotation marks, there were 82,000,000 results without the marks, and 11 results with the quotation marks.

  • Duck
  • When I was searched for learning to make web pages without the quotation marks, there wasn't a number for the results. According to the DuckDuckGo Help page, they can't easliy determine the number. However, with the quotation marks, there were only 6 results.

  • Kartoo
  • After I typed learning to make web pages both with and without quotation marks, the number of searches between them are the same. Both of them are 10 results.

    5. Are the number of hits consistent across search engines? If not, what do you think accounts for the differences? After looking at each of the above search engines, in what cases would you use a search engine that is not your current default (most likely Google)?

The number of hits across the search engines were somehow consistent. At first, it was consistent with Bing and Yahoo, but DuckDuckGo and Kartoo were different in how they both do not have a specifc number of results regardless if there are quotation marks or not. In the case where I would use a search engine besides Google, I would type down what I am looking for as a question.

    6. Take a look at Wolfram Alpha. Is this a search engine? If not, what would you call it? If you decide that it is, list the reasons that you would classify it as a search engine.

Wolfram Alpha is NOT a search engine. Not only were there no websites after I entered what I am looking for, but it was seperated in both the natural language and math input. In conclusion, Wolfram Alpha is nothing more but a computer system that focuses on the language and or mathematics of inquries.

    Using Metasearch Sites

    7. Head to Dogpile:

The main difference between them is that a regular search site uses only one search engine. On the other hand, a metasite like Dogpile has several search engines for specific searches such as images and news.

There was no number of results and the matches are organized by their relevancy to what was searched after the ads.

After visiting a couble of the sites, I can esitmate that there are a handful of them that are related to learning how to make web pages.

    Finding Multimedia Elements

    8. Either head to one of the search sites we've already used or head to one we haven't yet used and explore the front page of the site.

    9. Visit the Creative Commons site:

Creative Commons is an international nonprofit organization that provides CC licenses and other public domain tools that allows anyone copyright permissions. The reason why this must be used for images and other media was because the people who publish their works wanted to make sure that they are protected under copyright law.

    Put it all Together

    10. Now that you have explored the world of search engines, reflect on the experience. What have you learned that might influence the choices you make as a web designer?

After exploring search engines, I found it interesting that by using the quotation marks, it makes finding information most relevant to what I'm looking for more convinient. What I had learned from this experience that might influence the choices I make as a web designer is to search up what I'm looking for as either a question or put in quotation marks.
